Tonight’s Newport City Council meeting has been cancelled and will be rescheduled as soon as possible, according to a notice sent by the city’s communications department at 3:21 p.m.

The council was scheduled to convene at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at 43 Broadway to consider multiple contract awards, including police vehicle replacements, IT services upgrades, and copier leases. The agenda also included appointments to several municipal boards and commissions.

City Clerk Laura Swistak announced the cancellation in an email to media and city officials, stating the meeting “will be rescheduled as soon as possible.” No reason was given for the cancellation.

The rescheduled meeting will address items including contracts for police vehicle and equipment replacements, managed IT services, and renovations to the Florence Gray Center using pandemic recovery funds. The consent calendar also includes approval of several fall special events and daily liquor licenses for upcoming community gatherings.
