Seven Rhode Island artists working on Rose Island will showcase their creations to the public Saturday as part of the third annual Rose Island Artist Residency program.

The artists — Ryan Miech, Joseph Marchesi, Xander Marro, Isabella Uliasz, Welder Vasquez, Madeline Walent and Allison Wilbur — began their six-night residency Monday and will open their work to visitors Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.

The Rose Island Lighthouse & Fort Hamilton Trust, a Newport-based nonprofit that operates the artist program, has waived normal landing fees for the public event. Visitors need only pay ferry costs to reach the island.

The residency program supports Rhode Island artists creating projects inspired by Rose Island’s environment and history. This year’s program is funded by the trust and a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.

“The artists are working on projects in various media that are uniquely inspired by the environment and history of Rose Island,” according to the trust.

Visitors can reach the island via the Jamestown-Newport Ferry from stops at Jamestown’s East Ferry Wharf or Newport locations including Fort Adams, Ann Street Pier and Perotti Park. Personal watercraft and paddlecraft can also beach near the Rose Island dock, though the trust advises following all boating safety rules and monitoring weather conditions.

Once on the island, visitors can tour the lighthouse and historic structures, interact with the artists and explore hiking trails and beaches. The trust asks all visitors to pack out any trash or recycling.

The Rose Island Lighthouse & Fort Hamilton Trust has operated as a nonprofit since the mid-1980s, working to preserve the island’s historic and environmental integrity while maintaining public access to the lighthouse.

The trust welcomes donations to support current and future programs. More information is available at roseisland.org or on social media @roseislandnewport.
