Good morning, Newport! Today is Wednesday, July 9, the 190th day of 2025. There are 175 days left in the year.
🚨 You need to know
Comedy legend Jay Leno is set to light up Newport this week with a four-night stand-up comedy residency at Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co., running from Wednesday, July 9th through Saturday, July 12th. The former “Tonight Show” host, who maintains a part-time residence in Newport, will perform nightly at 8:00 p.m. as part of the venue’s Summer Series.
The intimate shows promise an evening of Leno’s signature observational humor in the relaxed atmosphere of the local craft brewery, complete with artisan cocktails, cold brews, and gourmet food offerings. Tickets are priced at $125 per show, with all proceeds benefiting the MLK Community Center, continuing Leno’s longstanding commitment to supporting Newport’s charitable causes.
This marks another chapter in Leno’s ongoing relationship with the City by the Sea, where he has previously graced the stages of The Firehouse Theater and the Jane Pickens Film & Event Center for various fundraising events. His willingness to perform for local charities has made him a beloved figure in Newport, demonstrating his dedication to giving back to the community he calls home.
All four shows have sold out, reflecting both Leno’s enduring popularity and the venue’s intimate capacity. Each performance runs from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
Here’s what else you should know

❌ The Rhode Island Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Management are urging the public to stay away from Almy Pond in Newport after detecting a harmful algae bloom that poses health risks to humans and animals.
🦞 What began as a laid-back Sunday tradition, just a handful of friends gathering at O’Brien’s Pub for lobster rolls, mudslides, and weekend recaps, has since transformed into one of Newport’s most impactful (and energetic) grassroots fundraisers. Tyler Bernadyn has more on the upcoming Lobby Muddy Fest and tells you how you can get involved.
👉 Newport City Council will host a Regular Council Meeting this evening at 6:30 pm at City Hall. Here’s what’s on the docket.
👉 Among the items on the Council’s docket is a resolution that revises the Rules of the Council. Councilor Stephanie Smyth, who is introducing the resolution with Councilor Ellen Pinnock, explains the purpose behind the revisions in this Letter to the Editor.
