What began as a laid-back Sunday tradition, just a handful of friends gathering at O’Brien’s Pub for lobster rolls, mudslides, and weekend recaps, has since transformed into one of Newport’s most impactful (and energetic) grassroots fundraisers.
Born out of community, connection, and a desire to give back, Lobby Muddy Fest officially launched in 2020. Since then, the event has grown exponentially, welcoming over 500 attendees per event at venues like Smugglers Waterfront Bar in Newport and Cisco Brewers Seaport in Boston. With over $100,000 raised to date, Lobby Muddy Fest has supported both The Jimmy Fund and its current nonprofit partner, Newport Mental Health.
“We saw an opportunity to turn something that we did weekly into something that would bring people together to benefit a bigger cause,” says James Miller, co-founder of the event. “Mental illness has affected a lot of our lives in many different ways, so working with a charity that focuses on this disease was a no-brainer for us.”
This year, the 6th Annual Lobby Muddy Fest will take place on Saturday, July 19th from 2–6 PM at Smugglers Waterfront Bar in downtown Newport, followed by the Lobby Muddy After Party at The Lobster Bar later that evening. The event features live music, great food, amazing raffles, unmatched energy, and a strong sense of purpose all while raising critical funds for mental health services in Newport County.
In addition to the summer festival, Lobby Muddy Fest is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor for the 2025 Rock the Beach Gala, Newport Mental Health’s signature fundraising event, which will be held on Thursday, September 25th at Newport Beach House. The gala promises an unforgettable night of live entertainment, coastal cuisine, dancing, and a live auction all in support of expanded access to mental health care in our community.
As a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, Newport Mental Health offers more than 30 programs for children, families, and adults experiencing mental illness, substance use, or emotional stress. Their team provides care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, and their impact is far-reaching.
“As a member of the board of directors for both Lobby Muddy Fest and Newport Mental Health, I get to see firsthand how vital this organization is to the fabric of our community,” says Tyler Bernadyn. “The staff is incredible, the services are essential, and it feels good to know that something that started as a small gathering is now creating real impact. It’s a ripple effect we’re proud of.”
