The Newport Democratic City Committee is organizing a protest rally against President Donald Trump’s policies and actions. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 17.

Called “Aquidneck Island Says ‘No’,” the rally will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the corner of Memorial Boulevard and Chapel Street in Newport.

The organizers are bringing together several local groups to stand against what they see as harmful actions and policies from Trump’s time in office.

Protesters plan to cover a range of issues. They’re speaking out against cuts to social benefits, tariffs, and what they view as an “oligarchy.” They’ll also show support for veterans’ services and mental health funding.

Johnston High School’s Haley Boudreau dominated on the mound, leading her team to a 4-0 victory over Portsmouth High School in a softball matchup on Tuesday. What’sUpNewp’s Justin Walker was on hand for the game and has a recap and photo gallery.

Governor McKee will deliver remarks this morning at the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s reopening. The hall has been closed since November for renovations, which include an innovative Hall of Famers’ Gallery, a new Celebration Gallery, a reimagined Welcome Center, and more. The community is invited to City Hall this evening at 6 pm for the swearing-in ceremony for Newport Police K-9 Bo.
