Portsmouth police are stepping up their efforts to combat drunk driving, with several arrests made during a recent weekend enforcement push.

From May 9-11, 2025, officers patrolled the town and responded to calls, resulting in four DUI charges and one arrest for public drinking.

On May 11, Christina Santos, 27, from Fall River, Mass., was pulled over at 6:13 p.m. after reports of erratic driving. Police found a 5-year-old passenger in her car and arrested Santos at 6:39 p.m. for driving under the influence with a child under 13 in the vehicle.

A two-car crash at Bristol Ferry Road and Boyd’s Lane led to the arrest of Angelo Oliveira, 68, from Bristol, R.I. Witnesses at the scene reported he appeared intoxicated.

On May 10, two more DUI arrests were made. Olivia Fryzel, 27, from North Dartmouth, Mass., was stopped for speeding at 2:20 a.m. and charged with first-offense DUI. Her blood alcohol content was between 0.10 and 0.15.

Later that night, Matthew Roethlein, 23, from Smithfield, R.I., was arrested near Route 24 North after officers spotted his vehicle breaking traffic laws.

In a separate incident on May 9, police arrested Alector Soares, 42, from Brockton, Mass., near the Sakonnet Bridge. Soares is charged with obstructing an officer and violating a local ordinance against drinking in public.
