Rhode Island is investing big in affordable housing, with three Newport County communities set to receive a total of $1.5 million in grants.

This is part of the state’s largest single-year investment through the Community Development Block Grant program.

Governor Dan McKee and the Rhode Island Department of Housing have announced over $3.5 million in total awards. These funds will support the creation or renovation of nearly 1,000 affordable housing units across the state.

Portsmouth, Middletown, and Jamestown are each getting $500,000 for their housing projects. In Portsmouth, the money will go to the Ade Bethune House, supporting 54 units. Middletown’s West House II project, also with 54 units, will benefit from the grant. Jamestown’s Housing Authority plans to use the funds to upgrade bathrooms in 35 units.

McKee highlighted the importance of these investments, saying they help build stronger, more vibrant communities across Rhode Island by expanding access to safe, affordable homes. He made the announcement during Affordable Housing Month, reinforcing the state’s commitment to long-term housing solutions.

“These Community Development Block Grant investments expand access to safe, affordable homes—helping us build stronger, more vibrant communities across Rhode Island.” said Governor McKee. “During Affordable Housing Month, we reaffirm our commitment to making meaningful, long-term investments in housing and delivering real results for Rhode Islanders.”

Deborah Goddard, Secretary of Housing, praised the applications submitted, noting they show how committed communities are to providing decent, safe, and affordable housing.

“The applications submitted reflect the strong commitment of our communities to providing decent, safe, and affordable housing,” said Secretary Goddard. “The Department of Housing looks forward to continuing these efforts in partnership with municipalities across the state.”

Christian Belden, Executive Director of Church Community Housing Corporation, emphasized the flexibility these funds provide. He explained that this allows organizations to address various community needs, ensuring residents of all income levels can continue to live and thrive in their communities.

“Community Development Block Grant Funds are a vital resource for creating affordable housing in Newport County,” said Belden. “These funds give us and other organizations the flexibility to respond to diverse community needs so that residents of all incomes can continue to live and thrive in the communities they call home.”
