K9 Bo (via City of Newport)

The Newport Police Department is welcoming a new four-legged member to its team. Bo, a chocolate Labrador Retriever, is training to become a therapy and comfort K9 for the Community Policing Unit.

Bo comes to the department as a generous gift from Dame Dogs Labradors in Pascoag. Local trainer Jess Gaes of Petrichor K9 is kindly offering her expertise to prepare Bo for his role as a Therapy/Comfort K9.

Once Bo completes his training and certification, he’ll play a crucial role in providing emotional support during tough situations, helping to reduce stress in community settings, and bringing a sense of calm to various scenarios. His responsibilities will include participating in outreach events, visiting schools, and assisting with sensitive calls.

Looking ahead, the department plans to expand Bo’s skills to include explosives detection for large events, following his initial therapy training.

Wag Nation is pitching in to help Bo settle into his new role by providing all his food, training materials, and grooming supplies.

The Newport Police Department invites residents to give Bo a warm welcome and keep up with his progress on Facebook and Instagram @K9BoNPD.
