AgInnovation Farm Students got their food into the cafeteria (contributed photo)

Produce grown by students at the AgInnovation Farm has reached the Portsmouth Middle School cafeteria, a step that required the farm and the students to earn food safety certification before anything they grew could be served.

Basil, tomatoes and garlic from the farm were used in a margherita pizza taste test for students.

The work was done through a Farm and Sea to School partnership involving Farm Fresh Rhode Island, the Portsmouth School Department, AgInnovation and Chartwells, the district’s food service provider, which has spent the past year connecting classroom instruction, curriculum and cafeteria offerings.
