A suspect wanted in connection with a July 19 double shooting near Park Holm in Newport was arrested Wednesday morning in Virginia by U.S. Marshals, police announced.
Tyquan Johnson, 19, was taken into custody at approximately 8:30 a.m. at an address on Chestnut Avenue in Newport News, Va., by members of the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. He faces charges of Felony Assault with a Firearm and Discharging a Firearm in a Compact Area.
The shooting occurred July 19 at approximately 9:55 p.m. near Truman Road and Rosedale Avenue, where officers found two Newport residents — ages 22 and 25 — with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to their lower extremities. Police characterized the incident as targeted and isolated.
As previously reported, Newport Police obtained an arrest warrant for Johnson on July 23 and warned the public he was considered armed and dangerous, with a last known address of 504 Concord Drive in Hampton, Va. Investigators learned he may have fled to Virginia and contacted the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, which tracked him to a residence in Newport News.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional charges may be filed. A second suspect has not yet been publicly identified.
