A fleet of classic sail and motor yachts will parade through Newport Harbor at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, as part of the 47th Newport Classic Yacht Regatta.

The parade starts at the south end of Goat Island and runs a circuit of the harbor, passing the wharves, IYRS, King Park, Ida Lewis Yacht Club and Fort Adams. Waterfront parks, public walkways and the IYRS campus all offer viewing.

Unlike the racing, the parade is open to any classic boat, power or sail, whether or not it’s registered for the regatta. Organizers are encouraging owners and crews to join.

“The Classic Yacht Parade is one of the most visible and inspiring moments of the weekend,” said Liz Isdale, IYRS vice president of advancement.

Ida Lewis Yacht Club is the organizing authority for the regatta, which runs Sept. 5-6 with racing both days as part of the CYOA Classic Yacht Challenge Series. IYRS presents the event. An awards ceremony and cocktail party at IYRS on Sunday evening is open to the public.

Registration and details are at iyrs.edu.
