The city will hold its annual Spring Recycling Day on Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to noon at Easton’s Beach, 175 Memorial Blvd., marking the 56th anniversary of Earth Day.
The event is free but open only to Newport residents, and proof of residency is required. No appointment is needed, and the event will be held rain or shine. Gates will not open before 8 a.m. and will close at noon.
Spring Recycling Day is designed for items that are harder to recycle through curbside pickup. Indie Cycle, LLC will be on hand to accept a wide range of electronic waste, including computers, laptops, monitors, televisions, cell phones, small household appliances and acid lead batteries. Additional fees apply for items containing coolant, such as air conditioners, small refrigerators and dehumidifiers, as well as for certain printers and speakers. A full list is available at www.indiecycle.com.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island will collect clothing and textiles, including items with tears or stains, provided they are clean. More information is available at www.DonateRI.org.
Residents may also drop off flattened cardboard, scrap metal, rigid plastics and up to three bulky items per household, such as a couch or a table. Homeowners with multiple Newport properties may bring up to six bulky items. Free on-site paper shredding is available for up to three banker’s boxes of sensitive documents per household. Magazines, newspapers and commercial materials will not be accepted.
Several categories of waste will not be accepted at the event, including household hazardous waste, cooking oil, Styrofoam, mattresses and plastic bags. The city noted that mattresses that are clean, dry and free of infestation can be dropped off for free at the Waste Management Transfer Station at 65 Halsey St. Household hazardous waste can be disposed of through the state’s Eco-Depot program; details are available at www.ecodepotri.org or by calling the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation at 401-942-1430, ext. 3241
