Newport Police have identified the man killed in Wednesday morning’s officer-involved shooting in Newport Harbor as Brendan Norris, 27, of Clinton Ave. in Newport.
The Rhode Island State Police and Newport Police, coordinating with the Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General, are continuing to investigate, the department said in a news release Wednesday evening.
The officer who was shot has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. All officers who discharged their firearms during the incident have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, in accordance with standard protocol.
The department’s peer support team and representatives from the statewide peer support network are assisting affected personnel.
The harbormaster responded to a report of a stolen boat at the Elm Street Pier around 9 a.m., and additional officers were called to assist, WPRI reported. Officers boarded the boat in the harbor and shots were fired. Traffic was detoured in the Point neighborhood near Storer Park and the Elm Street Pier.
Newport Police posted a public safety notice at 10:35 a.m. saying they were investigating an incident in the harbor near the Elm Street Pier and that there was no threat to the public.
The department said it will provide additional updates Thursday morning.
