The Jane Pickens Theater is kicking off a busy stretch of programming with the opening of the eight-time Oscar-nominated film “Hamnet” today and the announcement of three live concerts coming to the historic venue this spring.
The theater’s latest concert lineup features Newport-based folk trio Princess June on March 5, traditional Irish ensemble Turas with step-dancer Kiera Nagle on March 13 and The British Invasion Years on April 26.
Princess June celebrates debut album
Local folk trio Princess June will celebrate the release of their debut album, “Beyond the Fence,” with a record release party at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 5. The band — featuring songwriters Myah Strauser, Telli Quinn and Griffin Keeffe — recorded the album at Stable Sound Studio in Portsmouth with producer Steve Rizzo.
Drawing influences from Fleet Foxes, Fleetwood Mac and Sagittarius, the trio has performed at the JPT several times. Mystic-based singer-songwriter Brad Bensko will open. Early bird tickets are $30 until Feb. 5, when prices increase to $35.
Turas brings Irish tradition with young step-dancing prodigy
At 6 p.m. Friday, March 13, Turas — whose name means “journey” in Irish — will perform alongside 14-year-old Irish step-dancer Kiera Nagle in her debut with the band. Nagle began dancing at age 3 with the Kelly School of Irish Dance and has performed with Kevin Doyle’s Roscommon Soles at the Providence Performing Arts Center.
British Invasion Years revives ’60s rock
The British Invasion Years takes the stage at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 26, offering a multimedia retrospective of hits from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who and American acts including The Beach Boys, The Monkees and Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.
‘Hamnet’ opens today
The theater is currently one of the only regional venues screening “Hamnet,” director Chloé Zhao’s latest film starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley. The film has earned eight Academy Award nominations, including best picture, best director and best actress for Buckley, who is considered the frontrunner in her category. The film is not available for streaming or rental.
Note: Sunday, Jan. 25 screenings have been cancelled due to the impending snowstorm.
