Henry James Comes Home: Rediscovering America in the Gilded Age

Charter Books is set to host renowned author and critic Peter Brooks on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. (Update: this event has been rescheduled to May 20 due to illness).

Brooks will discuss his latest work, “Henry James Comes Home,” which takes readers on a journey through American novelist Henry James’s ten-month trip across the United States during the Gilded Age.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Charter Books, located at 8 Broadway. Attendees can look forward to a book discussion, followed by a Q&A session and book signing.

A representative from Charter Books expressed excitement about the upcoming event, saying, “We’re really looking forward to having Peter Brooks join us in Newport.”

Released on Apr. 15, Brooks’ book explores James’ American journey and the resulting work, “The American Scene.” It blends biography and literary criticism to follow James’ travels from New England to Florida, across the Midwest, and up the West Coast.

Peter Brooks is Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature at Yale University. He previously served as the Founding Director of Yale’s Whitney Humanities Center and led the Departments of Comparative Literature and French.

While the event is free, attendees are encouraged to RSVP through the Charter Books website.
