Today, the Rose Island Lighthouse and Fort Hamilton Trust (RILFHT) announced that after eight years of dedicated service, Lisa Morrison has decided to step down as president while remaining a board of directors member.
“Serving an organization that also happens to be a unique and enchanting place has been an absolute privilege,” Morrison said. “Rose Island, with its untouched beauty and serenity amidst the bustling harbor, has been a source of personal wonder and inspiration. I’m honored to have contributed to preserving its history and natural splendor while also introducing this gem to as many people as humanly possible.”
Lisa’s stewardship at RILFHT started precariously as she wrestled with some of the organization’s immediate challenges, most notably its financial stability and independence.
“Almost immediately, I had to get to work righting a listing ship,” Morrison recalled. “With the help of many like-minded people, tenacious fundraising, and a working board with a diverse set of skills, we were able to turn the tide of the organization and preserve the Trust for many generations to come.”
In addition to turning the organization around, Morrison helped oversee the management of the 18-acre island, preservation of the lighthouse and barracks, and the logistics of running a “living museum” where guests could spend the night.
Morrison officially resigned during the organization’s March 20th board meeting. The Board of Directors then elected Ryan Patrick Kelley as its new President.
“I never thought I would be president for this long, but I wanted to hand it off with a big bow to the next president. I feel I have accomplished this. We have a new and fantastic Executive Director in Sean O’Connor, who I have been honored to work with, and I’m looking forward to seeing how he and Ryan can collaborate to bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to Rose.”
Rose Island’s 2024 season officially kicks off on April 1st.
