The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center is rolling out a trio of classic film events this June, pairing big-screen restorations with curated tastings and themed programming at its historic Washington Square venue.
The series opens June 2 with “Chinatown,” Roman Polanski’s 1974 neo-noir starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and John Huston. The 7:30 p.m. screening features a recent 4K restoration and a pre-show Pinot Noir tasting of two wines, with doors opening for the tasting at 6:45 p.m. Written by Academy Award winner Robert Towne, the film follows private investigator J.J. “Jake” Gittes as a routine adultery case unravels into a web of corruption and family secrets in 1930s Los Angeles.
Next up is “Cobra” on June 4 at 8:30 p.m., part of the theater’s Cult Classic Collection “Summer of ’86” series. The Sylvester Stallone action film, also starring Brigitte Nielsen, returns in a new 4K restoration from Arrow Video. Critically panned on its 1986 release, the movie has since gained a devoted cult following. Newport Craft will offer a beer tasting in the lobby before the show.
The lineup closes June 11 at 7:30 p.m. with “Contact,” Robert Zemeckis’ 1997 adaptation of Carl Sagan’s novel. Jodie Foster stars as astronomer Ellie Arroway, who makes contact with extraterrestrial intelligence and navigates the political, religious and scientific fallout that follows. The screening is part of the theater’s “Films of Future Past” program.
