The Aquidneck Island Land Trust will host a free public lecture on island-wide climate resilience on Tuesday, June 9, at 6 p.m. at the DiStefano Lecture Hall at Salve Regina University, 56 Lawrence Ave. in Newport.

The talk, titled “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Collaborating to Build a Resilient Aquidneck Island,” will be given by Paige Myatt, director of Aquidneck Resilience, and Glennie LeBaron, the group’s community engagement manager.

Aquidneck Resilience is a collaboration between the city of Newport, the towns of Middletown and Portsmouth and Naval Station Newport, hosted at the Aquidneck Island Land Trust, according to the land trust. The speakers will discuss working across municipal boundaries on a Climate Resilience Plan intended to serve as a guidebook for reducing the island’s risk from severe weather events.

“The impacts of climate change don’t end at the town line,” said Terry Sullivan, the land trust’s executive director. “Aquidneck Resilience is built to bring our municipalities together with the Navy to address these issues across all of Aquidneck Island. Our vision is an island that works together to adapt to a changing climate, protecting our land, water, and people.”

The talk is part of the land trust’s Donner Series, sponsored by the William H. Donner Foundation.

Registration is requested through Eventbrite. The Aquidneck Island Land Trust said it has conserved 2,854 acres across 102 properties on the island since its founding in 1990. More information is available at ailt.org.
