One person died and two were seriously injured early Thursday when a car left West Main Road and struck a stone wall and utility pole in front of Linden Park, Middletown police said.

The southbound vehicle crashed near 141 West Main Road at about 1:20 a.m., according to a release from the department. Officers arrived to find the car fully engulfed in flames and pulled the driver and front-seat passenger out. A rear-seat passenger could not be freed and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Middletown Fire Department put out the fire. The driver and front-seat passenger were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.
