The Newport Classical Music Festival will present 30 concerts across 11 venues from July 2 through 19, the organization announced Thursday, marking its 57th year showcasing classical music in some of Newport County’s most iconic settings.
Performances will take place at The Breakers, The Elms, Castle Hill Inn, Blithewold Mansion, Rosecliff Mansion, Redwood Library and Athenæum, Newport Art Museum, Emmanuel Church, Norman Bird Sanctuary, Glen Manor House and King Park.
Highlights include opening night at The Breakers on July 2 with chamber orchestra Delirium Musicum; an Opera Night on July 18 featuring tenor Lawrence Brownlee and soprano Erin Morley performing bel canto masterpieces; and two evenings with Broadway star Jeremy Jordan on July 14 and 15 at The Breakers. Jordan is known for his lead roles in “Newsies” and “The Great Gatsby.”
Grammy Award-winning pianist Michelle Cann will make her Newport debut at Castle Hill Inn on July 7, performing works by Brahms, Robert Schumann and Clara Schumann against a sunset backdrop over the water.
The festival will also feature the regional premiere of “Goddess//Insect,” a new work by Juno Award-winning composer Vivian Fung co-commissioned by Newport Classical. Violinist Kristin Lee and Sandbox Percussion will perform the piece at The Breakers on July 9.
Other performances include Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble VOCES8 on July 11, Baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire on July 10, the Parker Quartet on July 5, and the Beijing Guitar Duo’s Newport debut at the Redwood Library on July 12.
The festival will again offer its popular sunrise concerts at 5:15 a.m. on the terrace of Rosecliff Mansion on July 10 and 17, with complimentary coffee and pastries.
A free outdoor Fourth of July concert at King Park on July 4 will feature Fenway Brass & Percussion ahead of the fireworks. The concert is part of the BankNewport Community Concerts Series.
Newport Classical’s Resident Festival Artists program returns for its fifth year, welcoming five early-career musicians who will appear in eight performances throughout the festival. This year’s residents are Nathan Amaral and Joshua Brown on violin, Joseph Skerik on viola, Leland Ko on cello and Janice Carissa on piano.
The festival closes July 19 at The Breakers with the Grammy Award-winning Harlem Quartet joined by the Resident Festival Artists for an evening of string octets.
“This summer, we’re proud to present 30 concerts that illuminate the enduring power of classical music, forging powerful connections between performers and audiences,” said executive director Oliver Inteeworn.
