It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ronald William Dunbar, Jr., 57, of Newport, Rhode Island, who passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2026, in Providence. Born in Newport to Bernadette Homer and Ronald William Dunbar, Sr., Ron ventured away for his education and career before returning to his hometown to raise his family — the place where his heart always belonged.
Ron attended Middletown High School, graduating in 1986. He went on to earn a degree in Accounting from The Pennsylvania State University and a Juris Doctor from Marshall College School of Law. Over a distinguished legal career, he earned the trust and admiration of colleagues and clients alike, known for his integrity, his sharp legal mind, and his genuine care for the people he served.
Ron gave his whole heart to his family. He and his wife, Kristin, shared sixteen years of marriage and raised four sons together — a partnership built on trust, laughter, and a deep and abiding love for one another. To Cameron, Ian, Noah, and Holden, he was a role model, a protector, and an unwavering source of encouragement. The lessons he taught them will live on in the men they are becoming.
Beyond his family and his career, Ron was a deeply devoted and beloved member of the recovery community in Rhode Island. He gave generously of his time and his heart, offering hope, guidance, and friendship to those walking a difficult road. His compassion and honesty helped countless people find their strength, and the impact he made on that community will endure long after him.
Ron is survived by his wife, Kristin Dunbar; his sons, Cameron, 23, Ian, 19, Noah, 15, and Holden, 14; his father, Ronald William Dunbar, Sr.; his sister, Jennifer Riley, and her son, Joey; and many cherished cousins and their families. He was predeceased by his mother, Bernadette Homer, and his brother-in-law, Joe Riley Sr.
Ron lived a life of purpose, kindness, and quiet strength, and he touched more hearts than words could ever capture. He will be forever missed by his wife, his sons, his family, his friends, and all those whose lives he graced. Rest peacefully, Ron — your love, your spirit, and your legacy will live on in each of us.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, August 3rd, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI. A celebration of life will follow on Tuesday, August 4th, at 11:30 a.m. at Stoneacre Brasserie, 28 Washington Square, Newport, RI.
