The dance program at Salve Regina University will bring its spring concert, “Currents,” to the Casino Theatre, 9 Freebody St., for three performances April 16-18.
The program is described as a journey through the forces and undercurrents that shape human experience, with faculty and student choreographers exploring themes of resistance, personal freedom and collective empowerment through movement.
The concert is directed by Salve senior Lexi Callaghan as her capstone project for a Bachelor of Arts in dance, reflecting her research on artistic direction and leadership.
Artist-in-Residence Candace Perry contributes “Friction Between Hues,” a work set to “Black Radio” by Robert Glasper featuring Yasiin Bey. The piece draws on social dance and the Black American continuum, with influences spanning hip hop, jazz and house.
Guest artist Brandi Coleman of Dallas joins student choreographers Abigail Argazzi, Jayden Bastille, Reene Nemchek and Lilly Wood. Additional works by Angelina Ahern, Theresa Cook, Elisabeth Muller and Cc Smith will be performed Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Pieces by Tiara Fallon, Chelsey Ghareeb and Cameron Leslie will appear Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Musical influences across the program range from Ray Charles and Sade to Mac Miller and contemporary jazz artist Nubya Garcia.
Tickets are $17 for general admission, $14 for children, military and seniors, and $10 for Salve faculty and staff. Salve students are admitted free with a student ID. Tickets are available at salve.edu/performances.
