The Newport String Quartet brings music from around the world to Jamestown and Newport (Newport String Project)

The Newport String Project will present the third weekend of its Newport County Concert Series on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m. at Jamestown Arts Center and Sunday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. at Trinity Church’s Honyman Hall in Newport.

The concerts will feature the project’s resident ensemble, the Newport String Quartet — Ealaín McMullin and Kenneth Trotter on violin, Florrie Marshall on viola and Chelsea Bernstein on cello — performing works by Mozart, Jiménez, Washington and Roustom.

The program is a musical celebration of childhood, playfulness and memory. Inspired by Jamestown Arts Center’s upcoming exhibit “Picturing Play,” the quartet will perform an eclectic set of works drawing inspiration from children’s folk songs from Mexico, Haiti, Afghanistan, Mali, Syria and Ghana.

Shelley Washington’s evocative “Middleground” depicts her memories of traveling cross country with family, gathering memories of cycling, fireworks and ice cream. The quartet will also perform Mozart’s beloved String Quartet in B-flat, “The Hunt,” which brims with optimism and delight.

The program includes Miguel Bernal Jiménez’s “Cuarteto Virreinal,” Kareem Roustom’s “Songs from Home,” Washington’s “Middleground” and Mozart’s String Quartet in B-flat, K. 458, “The Hunt.”

Tickets are available at newportstringproject.org.
