newportFILM Hosts Redux Screening of 2025 Sundance Audience Award Winning Documentary in Newport

A critically acclaimed documentary that had its outdoor screening cut short by a storm in August will get a second chance on the big screen next week.

newportFILM will host a redux screening of “ANDRÉ IS AN IDIOT,” winner of the 2025 Sundance Audience Award, on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport. The documentary was part of the organization’s summer outdoor series but was disrupted by weather.

The film follows André, a man who learns he is dying from a disease that could have been detected with a colonoscopy. Director Tony Benna uses stop-motion animation to bring André’s final journey to life as he approaches mortality with humor and curiosity.

The screening is presented in partnership with Colorectal Cancer Alliance and Cheeky Charity, with support from presenting sponsor Natera and indoors presenting sponsor Discover Newport.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with live music from Motion Avenue beginning at 6 p.m. The film starts at 7 p.m. at the theater at 49 Touro St.

Those who attended the August screening can use the discount code “RAIN” for $5 off tickets, which are available at newportFILM.com. The film is currently not available online.

newportFILM is a year-round nonprofit documentary film series that showcases stories meant to inspire, educate and entertain. The organization aims to build community and propel change through nonfiction cinema.
