This Saturday, June 6th, Newport's iconic Ocean Drive closes to cars and opens to people biking, walking, rolling and strolling - for just three hours - from 9am to 12 noon. (Bike Newport)

U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo and Newport Public Schools Superintendent Colleen Jermain will join Mayor Charlie Holder and safe cycling advocate Renee Kaminitz to welcome participants to Elliot’s Ride for Everyone on Saturday, June 6, organizers announced.

The welcome will begin at 8:45 a.m. in front of Rogers High School on Wickham Road, where light refreshments, bike support, registration and information will be available starting at 8 a.m. Ocean Avenue and Hazard Road will close to motor vehicles from 9 a.m. to noon, opening to people biking, walking, rolling, scooting and skating.

Now in its seventh year, the event is produced by the nonprofit Bike Newport and honors Elliot Kaminitz, a community member and bicycle safety advocate who was killed by a driver in 2012 near Easton’s Beach.

Parking is available at Rogers High School on Wickham Road and at Brenton Point State Park near the Ocean Avenue and Harrison Avenue entrance to the route, organizers said.

The event is free. More information and registration are available at bikenewportri.org/elliots-ride.
