Elizabeth “Liz” Barron, a school psychologist, veteran educator and parent of two Newport Public Schools students, has announced her candidacy for the Newport School Committee, with a focus on strengthening leadership, improving early intervention services for students and ensuring stable, adequate funding for the city’s schools.

Barron has lived in Newport for more than a decade. As a school psychologist who consults with districts across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, she said she has gained a broad perspective on what helps schools, students and families thrive.

“In my professional role, I see a wide range of school systems and approaches to supporting students,” Barron said. “What stands out is that while the communities and students may be similar, outcomes vary widely depending on leadership, vision, and the consistency of support. Strong leadership, clear priorities, and sustained commitment make a real difference for students and schools.”

In her work, Barron advocates for students and families with a particular focus on students with disabilities. “I care deeply about making sure every student has access to the support they need to succeed,” she said. “That means listening carefully, working collaboratively, and making decisions grounded in what is best for students.”

As a parent in the district, Barron said she sees both its strengths and challenges, pointing to Newport’s growing multilingual learner population as an asset while also acknowledging declining enrollment, rising special education costs and ongoing budget pressures. Even so, she said she is continually struck by the teaching and learning happening in Newport schools.

“Our educators are creating meaningful, engaging, and supportive environments for students, even while navigating significant challenges,” Barron said.

Barron said she is committed to bringing families, educators and community members together to support strong, equitable public schools in Newport. More information is available at barronfornewport.com.
