Good morning, Newport! Today is Sunday, July 6, the 187th day of 2025. There are 178 days left in the year.

🚨 You need to know

The International Tennis Hall of Fame Open kicks off today in Newport, marking a groundbreaking moment for professional tennis as the tournament debuts its new combined ATP Challenger and WTA 125 format. The eight-day event, running through July 13, represents the first sanctioned WTA tournament in Newport in 35 years and makes the Hall of Fame Open the only grass court event outside of Europe on both professional tours.

Today’s qualifying matches begin at 11:00 AM across five courts, featuring both men’s and women’s players competing for spots in the main draw. The tournament replaces the ATP 250 event that had been held in Newport from 1976 to 2024, welcoming professional women’s tennis back to the historic grass courts where American tennis first took root in 1881. Spectators can catch qualifying action on the Center Court and three additional courts, with gates opening at 10:00 AM for general admission.

The Hall of Fame has demonstrated its commitment to equity by raising the WTA 125 prize purse by 60 percent to match the ATP Challenger purse, with both tours offering $200,000 in total prize money. The tournament is supported by The MARGARET Fund, which seeks to expand opportunities for girls and women in education and employment. Throughout the week, fans can enjoy special themed days including tomorrow’s Women’s Sports Day featuring local professional teams, Wednesday’s TeamFAME Day celebrating junior tennis, and Thursday’s Sustainability Day highlighting the tournament’s certified green practices.

Beyond the professional competition, the tournament coincides with the newly renovated International Tennis Hall of Fame Museum, which reopened in May following a multi-million-dollar transformation. Daily guided tours are available at 2:00 PM, and the week will culminate with the announcement of the 2025 Hall of Fame inductees Maria Sharapova and Bob and Mike Bryan, who will be honored during the Induction Celebration in August.

Tickets and more information are available at halloffameopen.com, with today’s matches streaming live and Wimbledon coverage available in the fan zone throughout the tournament week.
