Newport is getting ready to celebrate national Bike to Work Day on Friday (May 16) with events designed to encourage cycling as a commuting option.

Bike Newport and the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) are teaming up to host activities in front of City Hall at 43 Broadway. The day starts with a Commuter Breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m.

For those coming from off-island, there’s a new Park & Ride lot on Connell Highway that’s perfect for starting your ride.

RIPTA is pitching in with T-shirts, ankle cuffs, and a chance to win Cleverhood rain gear in a raffle, on top of the breakfast offerings. They’re also promoting their new app, DRIVE LESS RI, which participants can download.

The celebration continues at 4:30 p.m. with updates and announcements about cycling in the area, including the presentation of the annual Bicycle Friendly Business of the Year award. At 5 p.m., everyone’s invited to join a group celebration ride.

Bike to Work Day is part of National Bike Month. For more details about the event and other Bike Month activities, check out bikenewportri.org/b2wd-2025/.
