BEN-HUR (SILENT, 1925) 100TH ANNIVERSARY W/ LIVE MUSICAL SCORE

The JPT will take you through the decades with April’s showings of Dr. StrangeloveGood Night, and Good LuckThe Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.

Spanning from first-century Jerusalem to French romance in the ‘60s, each film is rather timely to today’s societal themes. The JPT remains Newport’s go-to destination for unforgettable cinematic events.

April sees classics reborn in 4K on the big screen, recreation of century-past screenings, a fresh film-to-stage-to-screen adaptation, and a black and white reminder about the importance of speaking truth to power.”

Dr. Strangelove: National Theatre Live (Wednesday, April 2, 6 PM) 

National Theatre Live features are back, this time with BAFTA Award-winner Steve Coogan taking on four roles in the world premier stage of Stanley Kubrick’s satire black comedy. Set during the Cold War, the live performance tells the story of how a rogue U.S. general triggers a nuclear attack and is met with a government scramble to avoid absolute mayhem. Good Night, and Good Luck (Tuesday, April 8, 7:30 PM)

The 2005 historical drama captures the on-air conflict between CBS veteran journalist Edward R. Murrow and Sen. Joseph McCarthy as Murrow and his team attempts to expose the lies and atrocities of McCarthy’s Senate anti-communist investigation. Released in classic black-and-white, the film is set in the 1950s, setting the scene for media pushback against government policy for the whole world to watch. Now a hit Broadway play starring George Clooney, the film is a refresher for those who have loved it since its release and an accompaniment for modern political and media landscape. For tickets, click here.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Wednesday, April 16, 7:30 PM)

The French five-time Academy-Award nominee has returned to the big screen in 4K restoration, weaving together the heart-tugging story of an umbrella shop owner’s daughter and long-distance war lover. Through times of unity and separation, Catherine Denevue and Nino Castelnuovo will sweep you off your feet with the dazzling kaleidoscope of colors and French music. For tickets, click here.

Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (Saturday, April 19, 4:30 PM)

Celebrating 100 years of this silent film, the original 1925 story follows Judah ben-Hur as he is unjustly forced to serve on a Roman ship after being betrayed by his childhood friend and has a shot at vengeance competing in his famous chariot race. Shown in classic black and white, silent film expert/accompanist Jeff Rapsis will supplement with an epic live musical score on synth-piano. For tickets, click here.
