Newport County is bracing for a mixed bag of winter weather this weekend. The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton has issued both a Winter Weather Advisory and a High Wind Watch for the area.

The Winter Weather Advisory kicks in at 1 p.m. Saturday and runs through 7 p.m. Sunday. We’re looking at 2 to 4 inches of snow, plus a light glaze of ice up to one-tenth of an inch. Drivers should be ready for slippery roads.

On top of that, a High Wind Watch is in effect from Sunday evening through Monday evening. Expect west winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph. These strong winds could knock down trees and power lines, possibly causing outages. Travel might be tricky, especially for high-profile vehicles.

The weather event starts with snow on Saturday afternoon, changing to rain early Sunday morning. Sunday’s high will be near 45°F, with east winds shifting to south and gusting up to 28 mph.

Rain continues Sunday night as winds pick up. The low will dip to around 26°F, with west winds of 20 to 29 mph and gusts up to 40 mph.

Monday, which is Washington’s Birthday, will be mostly sunny but chilly with a high near 32°F. It’ll still be breezy, with west winds around 23 mph and gusts up to 40 mph.
