Are you ready to embark on a gastronomic adventure like no other? The Newport Burger Bender, running from February 14-23, is an annual celebration that brings together the finest local chefs and restaurants, serving burger enthusiasts far and wide. Sponsored by Discover Newport, the competition at area restaurants is a destination event for many locals and visitors from around the region.
The Bender begins on Valentine’s Day, February 14, and runs through February 23. The process is simple – go to the restaurant, order a burger or two, and then vote online here. The competition includes three categories: beef, non-beef, and vegetarian/plant-based. “The non-beef can be anything from bison to chorizo to seafood,” said Cassandra Earle of Discover Newport, who shared more about what to expect this year.
“People really get into it,” she noted. “Many make it an annual event, and some people get together in groups. It’s a perfect complement to the Newport Winter Festival, also happening that week. It’s good burger weather!”
Burger sales have significantly boosted traffic at area restaurants in a typically slow month. “Last year, between all the restaurants, they sold over 7,300 burgers, with over 2000 votes,” said Earle. “We had over 50 restaurants participate.” The competition includes establishments in Newport and Bristol counties.
At the heart of the Newport Burger Bender is the creativity of its participants. Local chefs and restaurants pull out all the stops to craft burgers that are not just delicious but also visually stunning. The possibilities are endless, and the competition is fierce as chefs vie for the coveted title of “Best Burger in Newport.”
“In 2024, we introduced the Hall of Fame, for burgers that have won multiple times in the same category,” Earle explained. “We have two burgers currently in the Hall, one from the La Forge Casino, in the beef burger category, and the other from Boathouse Restaurant in Tiverton in the non-beef category. We’ve seen a number of plant-based burgers entered over the last few years, about half a dozen last year.”
“One of the most fun parts of this contest is seeing all the restaurants really get into it,” said Earle. “Not just the culinary teams, but the teams behind it, including the front of house staff, they go all out. It’s a chance for them to enjoy a little energy in the quieter season and have some fun with it. It’s become such a positive event for everybody involved.”
Needless to say, the Burger Bender is an excellent way to support local businesses. “During the week, we’ll see visitors from all over New England; it’s school vacation week for nearby states, and obviously, Winter Festival is happening, which is a great family attraction.”
Earle’s advice: “Dig in, have fun, plan for it. It’s a reason to get out and have some fun with friends and family, and try some really creative stuff while supporting local restaurants.”
