Today, Senator Dawn Euer announced that she will run for re-election to the Rhode Island Senate in District 13, which represents Newport and Jamestown.
On her campaign, Euer said, “Each year, as we make progress on a variety of critical issues at the State House, it is made clear that impactful state policy has the ability to make a difference in people’s daily lives. At a time when there are intense pressures on household budgets, and people are feeling disenfranchised and distrustful of our government institutions, I am more committed than ever to push for policies with everyday Rhode Islanders in mind.”
When asked which legislation she is most proud of during the 2024 session, Euer named three in particular. The first is a bill that streamlines notifications about business filings intended to support small businesses. It mandates that the Department of State regularly inform businesses of outstanding tax liabilities, which in the past has not been required, resulting in severe penalties and fees. Euer said, “I know this new law is understated, but will have a big impact. In my private sector role, I frequently have to advise and help correct errors that were made unknowingly and unintentionally. This is a great initiative that will remove a lot of headaches for small business owners in Rhode Island.”
Additionally, in 2024, Euer spearheaded the passage of the Healthcare Provider Shield Act, which protects doctors providing evidence-based gender-affirming and/or reproductive healthcare here in Rhode Island. Euer said, “Anti-choice and anti-trans activists have filed aggressive lawsuits against physicians using laws from other states like Texas or Florida to try to intimidate doctors from providing patient care that is legal in the states in which they are practicing. I will continue to fight for our LGBTQIA+ residents and protect healthcare access for all.”
Another new 2024 law introduced by Euer will allow nursing home residents to choose to have cameras installed in their rooms. “This opens up the opportunity for residents to install a camera if they so choose, it does not require them in any room, adding peace of mind to residents and their families as a way of contact, oversight, and protection.”
In her time in office, Euer has been active on legislation around short-term rentals, the environment, voting access, protecting victims of sexual assault, preserving open space, and many other issues. She was first sworn into office in a 2017 special election and has served three terms.
For the last two years, Euer has chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee, one of the highest-ranking committees in the Senate, responsible for advice and consent of Judges and other high-ranking cabinet members. At the beginning of 2024, she was appointed to the EPA’s Local Government Advisory Committee, which provides independent policy advice to the EPA Administrator on a broad range of issues. On her appointment, Euer said, “Rhode Island’s local communities know firsthand the impacts of environmental issues and climate change. I am ready to bring our voice to national conversations about climate change and environmental policy.”
