Justice Melissa A. Long

The League of Women Voters of Newport County is set to host Rhode Island Supreme Court Justice Melissa A. Long for a discussion on advancing civil rights in the state’s courts. The event, “Justice for All: Advancing Civil Rights in Rhode Island’s Courts,” is scheduled for May 20, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport.

Justice Long, who heads the Supreme Court Committee on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts, will lead a conversation about ongoing efforts to create a more equitable legal system in Rhode Island. The event will also feature a panel discussion with judges and court leaders who recently visited Montgomery and Selma, Alabama. These officials traced the footsteps of civil rights icons and explored the roots of systemic injustice during their trip.

Appointed to the Rhode Island Supreme Court in 2021, Justice Long brings valuable insight to this important discussion. The event is free and open to the public, with no registration needed. It aims to encourage dialogue and understanding about the ongoing work to address racial and ethnic fairness in Rhode Island’s courts.
