A 32-year-old man was arrested Monday night after a standoff of nearly four hours at a Dudley Avenue residence, Newport police said.
Officers went to 12 Dudley Ave. at 3:45 p.m. on a report that Khaleel Mills had assaulted a man and threatened to shoot him with a pistol, according to a release from the department. Police said Mills ran into the residence as officers arrived. Officers set up a perimeter and called in the Newport County Special Response Team.
Crisis negotiators with the team made contact with Mills, and at 7:35 p.m. he agreed to come out and was taken into custody without incident, police said.
Mills was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, Sept. 1, on charges of possession of a firearm while committing a crime of violence, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, domestic assault on a person over 60, domestic disorderly conduct and violation of a no-contact order.
The charges are accusations. Mills is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
