The field for Newport’s fall municipal elections began to come into focus Tuesday as candidates filed declarations of candidacy on the second day of the state’s three-day filing window.

Five candidates have entered the race for Newport City Council at-large, including incumbent Stephanie Smyth. Also filing were Jane LeBoeuf, Kevin Michaud, Christine Hope Sullivan, and James Dring, who currently serves as chair of the Newport School Committee.

In the ward races, incumbents Ellen Pinnock (Ward 1) and David R. Carlin III (Ward 3) filed without opposition Tuesday. Ward 2 saw the most competition, with incumbent Lynn Underwood Ceglie drawing two challengers: Emily Conklin and John M. Walker.

Eight candidates filed for the Newport School Committee: Amy Yozura, Penelope B. Hunt, Brian Rochelle, Elizabeth Barron, Carrie Cassady, Conner J. Hourihan, Nicole Shevory, and Kendra Wilson Muenter.

On the state level, current City Councilor Xaykham Khamsyvoravong filed as a Democrat for Lieutenant Governor. Incumbent Sen. Dawn Euer drew a Democratic primary challenge from Angela Lima in Senate District 13. In the House, Lauren H. Carson (District 75) and Marvin Abney (District 73) both filed as Democrats.

Declarations of candidacy must be submitted to the Newport Board of Canvassers by 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 24. Nomination papers will be available for pickup June 30 and must be returned by July 10 at 4 p.m. The primary is September 9; the general election is November 3.
