Newport City Hall

As a Marine, I’ve learned that true leadership means putting others before yourself, making tough decisions, and doing whatever it takes to serve the people depending on you. These qualities are rare, but I’ve had the privilege of seeing them firsthand in Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong. His unwavering commitment to Newport, his ability to deliver results, and his vision for the future make him the leader that Newport needs to continue driving the community forward.

Xay’s track record speaks for itself. Over his first 22 months in office, he has achieved what many only promise. By holding the line on taxes for full-time residents, addressing the housing crisis, and securing over $40 million in state and federal commitments for infrastructure and resiliency projects, Xay has proven he is not just a leader who talks but one who delivers.

Housing is one of the most pressing challenges that Newport faces, and Xay’s three-pronged approach—protecting homeowners, cracking down on illegal short-term rentals, and boosting middle-class and workforce housing—has already made a tangible difference. Thanks to his efforts, Newport is on track to create 300 new housing units, ensuring families and working professionals can afford to stay in the city they love.

His commitment to education is equally impressive. Xay understands that quality education is the foundation of any strong community. That’s why he secured $7.5 million in grants to expand the Florence Gray Center, creating a hub for after-school programs, workforce training, and literacy initiatives. His leadership ensures that Newport’s children, families, and working adults have the resources they need to thrive.

But it’s not just Xay’s achievements that make him the right choice for Newport—it’s his character. As someone who has worked alongside him, I can attest to his intelligence, efficiency, and unshakable integrity. Xay is the kind of leader who listens carefully, takes action decisively, and never loses sight of the people he serves. He is approachable, deeply caring, and genuinely invested in making Newport the best it can be for everyone.

Xay’s ability to tackle complex problems with smart, innovative solutions sets him apart. Whether it’s securing broadband for underserved neighborhoods, championing climate resiliency projects, or addressing Newport’s evolving infrastructure needs, Xay does so with a clear vision and meticulous planning. His leadership is efficient and forward-thinking, ensuring Newport is prepared for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

As a Marine, I know what it means to lead with integrity and serve with purpose. Xay embodies these values in every decision he makes. His dedication to Newport is not just professional—it’s deeply personal. As the son of a Laotian refugee and a product of Rhode Island public schools, Xay understands the value of opportunity and the importance of community. He has never forgotten where he comes from, and he uses his platform to lift others up. Now, more than ever, Newport needs a leader who can bring people together, make tough decisions, and deliver results. Xay Khamsyvoravong is that leader. His accomplishments are proof of his ability, and his character is proof of his heart.

Regards,

Nick Kaufman USMC (Ret.), Newport
