Gov. Dan McKee announced on Thursday his nomination of Cory King to lead the Rhode Island Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner (OHIC), a state agency that oversees health insurance providers.
King has served as acting commissioner of OHIC since December 2022 and has been with the agency since 2019, first serving as Director of Policy and then Chief of Staff.
“Cory has proven to be a dedicated, highly capable leader who is committed to fighting every day to improve our state’s health care system,” McKee said in a news release. “I’m thrilled to have Cory continue his work to ensure equitable access and comprehensive coverage for all Rhode Islanders.”
If confirmed by the state Senate, King will continue his work on implementing the McKee administration’s Health Spending Accountability and Transparency Program, which aims to make health insurance premiums more affordable for working Rhode Islanders by increasing transparency into health care spending data.
He also led the creation of OHIC’s Data Hub, which provides the public with access to health care spending, utilization, and payment data.
“It is an honor to be nominated by Governor McKee to serve as Rhode Island’s Health Insurance Commissioner,” King said in a news release. “If confirmed by the Senate, I look forward working in collaboration with all stakeholders to improve Rhode Island’s health care system.”
