The Preservation Society of Newport County (Newport Mansions) has announced six weeks of holiday programming and events including “A Musical Retelling of ‘A Christmas Carol,’ Performed by Skylark and Narrated by Christine Baranski,” December 17 at 7pm at The Breakers; Holiday Dinner Dance at the Breakers, December 19; and the return of the beloved annual Sparkling Lights at The Breakers presented by BankNewport, November 21 – December 27 from 4-8pm.(Newport Mansions)

Christine Baranski will narrate a musical retelling of “A Christmas Carol” at The Breakers on Thursday, Dec. 17, performing with the vocal ensemble Skylark in a one-night event that anchors six weeks of holiday programming at the Newport Mansions.

Baranski, an Emmy and Tony winner, stars in HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” which films at several Newport properties. Skylark performs under Grammy-nominated artistic director Matthew Guard. A 6 p.m. reception with access to Sparkling Lights precedes the 7 p.m. performance. Tickets go on sale Oct. 20 for Preservation Society members and Oct. 22 for everyone else.

Sparkling Lights at The Breakers, presented by BankNewport, returns for a seventh season from Nov. 21 through Dec. 27, open 4 to 8 p.m. The half-mile lighted path includes illuminated displays and music, with the decorated interior of the house open and refreshments for sale. A member night is set for Dec. 13.

Holiday decorations go up at The Breakers, Marble House and Chateau-sur-Mer from Nov. 21 through Jan. 3, with nearly 30 decorated trees and a 15-foot poinsettia tree in the Great Hall made from 150 plants. The Breakers and Marble House are open daily; Chateau-sur-Mer weekends only.

  • Holiday wreath-making workshop, Dec. 5, 10 a.m. to noon at The Breakers greenhouse, led by gardens director Jeff Curtis. Materials provided.
  • Behind the scenes decorating tours with curator of historic landscapes Jim Donahue, Dec. 10 at The Breakers and Dec. 17 at Marble House, both 10 to 11 a.m.
  • Holiday Dinner Dance, Dec. 19 at The Breakers, black tie, with dinner in the Great Hall or State Dining Room and dancing in the Music Room. Tickets Oct. 7 for members, Oct. 13 for the public.

The Preservation Society is also looking for donations of two evergreen trees, 20 to 30 feet, to be lit in Washington Square and at Marble House. Anyone with a tree can call 401-846-7718.
