Residents of Newport and Middletown now have a new way to get around without a car.
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority launched its Flex On Demand microtransit service Monday in five communities across the state, including a new zone covering Newport and Middletown. The service allows riders to book on-demand, curb-to-curb trips for $2 through a smartphone app — the same fare as a standard RIPTA bus ride.
The 231 Flex Zone, which covers Newport and Middletown, operates Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and Saturday from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. There is no Sunday or holiday service.
Riders can request trips through the Flex On Demand app, available on Apple and Google app stores, which provides estimated pickup times, real-time tracking and arrival alerts. Unlike private rideshare services, the program has no surge pricing. All vehicles are wheelchair accessible.
“RIPTA is developing more and more innovative services to grow ridership in a cost-effective way,” CEO Christopher Durand said in a statement.
RIPTA is offering new users a free round-trip ride with the promo code “FLEXMORE,” redeemable through the app through March 31. Riders without a smartphone can call a Flex reservationist at 401-784-9500, ext. 1220, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
First-time riders can also take advantage of Bus Buddy, a free program that pairs new users with a RIPTA staff member for one-on-one guidance on trip planning, fare payment and navigating the system.
RIPTA first piloted Flex On Demand in August 2024 in a zone covering Narragansett and South Kingstown. Monday’s expansion also added service in Westerly, West Warwick and Coventry.
