Newport County residents are waking up to clear skies Tuesday morning after a powerful winter storm dumped up to 13 inches of snow across the region over the weekend.

School delays

Newport Public Schools, Tiverton Public Schools and Little Compton Public Schools are on a one-hour delay Tuesday. There is no morning preschool in Little Compton and no AM pre-K in Tiverton.

Jamestown Public Schools are on a two-hour delay with no AM preschool.

The Met – East Bay will have a virtual learning day Tuesday.

Salve Regina University is closed Tuesday.

Parking bans

Portsmouth and Tiverton parking bans remain in effect until further notice. Check with local police departments for updates.

Sidewalk clearing

Residents and business owners in Newport are required to clear sidewalks adjacent to their property during daylight hours Tuesday. The city extended the usual four-hour deadline due to ongoing snow throughout Monday.

Once shoveling is complete, the city asks that sidewalks are passable and treated for ice to keep pedestrians safe.

Other closings and delays

Naval Station Newport has a two-hour delayed opening Tuesday.

Edward King House Senior Center is closed Tuesday.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Newport has no AM daycare. Newport Family and Child Opportunity Zone has no AM Champion Childcare.

Final snowfall totals

According to the National Weather Service, Newport County received the following snow totals from the storm: Tiverton 13 inches, Middletown 11.5 inches, Portsmouth 11 inches and Jamestown 9.4 inches.

Across Rhode Island, Smithfield led with 18.5 inches, followed by North Providence at 18.4 inches and Warren at 17.7 inches. The official observation at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick measured 13.3 inches.

Cold weather ahead

A frigid stretch continues through the week. Tuesday will see increasing clouds with a high near 24 and wind chills as low as 2 below zero, with gusts up to 30 mph. Temperatures drop to around 12 overnight with wind chills near 1 below.

Wednesday will be sunny with a high near 23, followed by a slight chance of snow Wednesday night. Thursday and Friday remain cold and mostly sunny, with highs in the low 20s and overnight lows in the single digits.

Another chance of snow arrives Saturday night.
