The Aquidneck Island Land Trust is accepting entries for its 11th annual Art & Writing Contest, inviting students to capture their favorite island landscapes through creative expression.
The contest, sponsored by Sixteen On Center, challenges students to reflect on their favorite Aquidneck Island vista and its relationship with the changing environment. Students can submit artwork, essays or poems that express their observations and feelings about these natural spaces.
“Aquidneck Island is renowned for its natural beauty,” said Terry Sullivan, executive director of the Aquidneck Island Land Trust. “This annual contest encourages students to look closely at the landscapes that make our Island unique—from its farms and forests to its coastline—and to share their appreciation through art and writing.”
The competition is open to students who live or attend school on Aquidneck Island, including homeschooled students. Entries are divided into three age categories: kindergarten through fourth grade, fifth through eighth grade, and ninth through 12th grade. Each category awards first-, second- and third-place prizes ranging from $50 to $250.
First-place winners’ schools will receive $500 cash grants to supplement environmental education programs. All winners also receive family memberships to the Land Trust.
Written submissions must be entered through the online portal at ailt.org/our-work/#outreach-and-education by noon Dec. 5. Artwork can be dropped off in person at the Land Trust offices at 790 Aquidneck Ave., second floor, Middletown, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Winners will be selected by panels of art and writing judges and recognized at the Land Trust’s annual meeting.
The Aquidneck Island Land Trust has conserved 2,854 acres across 102 properties on Aquidneck Island since its founding in 1990.Retry
