Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard will host its annual Pumpkin Regatta on Oct. 10 to raise funds for Sail Newport.

The event will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at the shipyard at 1 Washington St. Participants will race in fiberglass pumpkins across the marina’s basin in a relay-style competition.

Entry costs $25 for paddlers and spectators. The event will include food from A Mano Pizza, a silent auction and opportunities for direct donations.

“Our annual Pumpkin Regatta has become a legendary event for our yacht captains and crew who look forward to it each year and enjoy the friendly, but competitive, nature of the race,” said Michael Millerick, general manager of Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard.

Last year, more than 125 people attended the regatta, raising over $8,000 for the Confetti Foundation, according to organizers. The event has run for more than 13 years, with proceeds benefiting a different organization annually.

Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport, said the organization will use the funds for community sailing programs.

“The marine community in Newport is like none other in supporting and building opportunities for all on Narragansett Bay,” Read said.

Prizes will be awarded for the fastest team and best costumes. Teams may race multiple times to improve their times.

Sponsors include RC Marine Electric, Newport Yacht Builders, Casey’s Oil & Propane, al fresco Composites, Itchiban Yacht Painters, Newport Rigging Group, Hallam’s Marine Service and BWA Yachting.

Registration and donation information is available by contacting Veronica Brown at 401-855-0945 or vbrown@shmarinas.com.
