Portsmouth High School’s boys soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision Tuesday night to Pawtucket Co-op at Max Reed Field in Pawtucket. The Patriots, coached by Mike Stinton with assistants Evan Carnevale and Jeff McGuirl, saw their record fall to 2-4-1 on the season with the loss.
The first half saw both teams battle to a scoreless tie, with neither squad able to find the back of the net despite several opportunities. Portsmouth’s defense, anchored by senior goalkeeper James Hacket, kept the game level through the opening 40 minutes. The Patriots managed four shots on goal throughout the contest, while Hacket finished with five saves between the posts.
Pawtucket Co-op broke the deadlock in the second half, capitalizing on their opportunities to score two quick goals that put Portsmouth in a difficult position. The Co-op, coached by Pierre Ridore with assistant Luke Ozobialu, had been seeking their first victory of the season after entering the match winless.
Portsmouth senior captain Nolan Fox provided a spark late in the second half, finding the net to cut the deficit and give his team hope of a comeback. However, Pawtucket added another goal to seal the 3-1 victory, earning their first win of the campaign. The Patriots will look to regroup as they continue their season.
