The highly anticipated documentary “Water Brother: The Sid Abbruzzi Story” is now available for purchase and rental on major digital platforms, bringing the story of Newport’s legendary surfer and skater to audiences worldwide.

The 90-minute film, directed by Charles and Daniel Kinnane and produced by Kinnane Brothers studio, premiered at Fort Adams State Park in August 2023 through newportFILM and subsequently sold out multiple screenings at the JPT Film & Event Center.

“Water Brother” tells the compelling story of Sid Abbruzzi, described as an East Coast legend and culture icon whose influence extends far beyond Newport’s shores. The documentary explores Abbruzzi’s lifelong passion for surfing and skating, as well as his deep commitment to protecting these sports’ history and culture. As Abbruzzi approaches the age of seventy-two, the film becomes particularly poignant as it captures the final days of his famous Water Brothers Surf & Skate shop, set to be demolished, exploring the impact of the shop’s closure on both the local community and the broader surf and skate world.

Blending rare archival footage with contemporary interviews, the documentary traces Abbruzzi’s journey from 1960s Newport to global destinations including Santa Cruz, Cocoa Beach, South Africa’s Jeffrey’s Bay, and beyond. Through a mix of never-before-seen archival film, personal interviews, and large format cinematic footage, the film features exclusive interviews with giants of the surf, skate, and art world, including skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, renowned artist Shepard Fairey, sports commentator Selema Masekela, and surfers Christian Fletcher, Greyson Fletcher, Peter Mel, and Balaram Stack, among others.

The documentary highlights the significance of memory, personal history, and living in the present, serving as both a poignant reflection on a life well-lived and a heartfelt tribute to the enduring spirit of surf culture. It celebrates the individuals and places that elevate surfing and skating beyond mere hobbies, demonstrating how one person’s dedication can inspire an entire community and preserve cultural heritage for future generations.

With its digital release, Newport audiences and surf culture enthusiasts worldwide can now experience this tribute to a local legend.

“Water Brother: The Sid Abbruzzi Story” is available for rental at $4.99 HD or purchase at $14.99 HD on Amazon Prime Video. Rentals include 30 days to start watching and 48 hours to finish once started.

The film is also available on Apple TV, with English audio and closed captions provided.
