Starting today, What’sUpNewp readers can now listen to select stories on our website with the launch of Everlit, an AI-powered audio reading feature that transforms our written journalism into accessible audio content.
When you visit one of our featured stories, you’ll notice a sleek audio player positioned prominently below the headline. Simply click the triangular play button, and you can hear our stories read aloud with high-quality, natural-sounding AI voices while you commute, exercise, or multitask.
“We’re always looking for innovative ways to serve our Newport County community,” said Ryan Belmore, Owner and Publisher of What’sUpNewp. “Audio storytelling allows us to meet our readers where they are – whether they’re walking along the Cliff Walk, driving to work, or simply prefer to consume news through listening.”
The new feature addresses the growing demand for audio content, with audio audiences expanding at one of the fastest rates in media engagement. Each month, we’ll be adding audio versions to select stories across our coverage areas, from breaking news and local government to arts, culture, and community features that matter most to Newport County residents.
How it works
The embedded audio player appears under our story headlines and lead images. Readers can control playback speed, pause and resume at any point, and enjoy crystal-clear audio optimized for any device.
“This isn’t about replacing the written word,” emphasized Belmore. “It’s about expanding access and engagement. Some people learn better through listening, others are visually impaired, and many simply want the flexibility to consume local news while living their busy lives.”
Quality and accuracy first
While Everlit uses advanced AI technology to generate these audio readings, What’sUpNewp maintains full editorial control. Every recording includes a clear disclaimer that the story is being read by an AI voice.
We’re committed to transparency in how we use technology to enhance our journalism, not replace the human element that makes local news coverage authentic and trustworthy.
Looking ahead
The Everlit integration represents part of What’sUpNewp’s ongoing digital evolution to better serve Newport County. As audio engagement continues to grow, we’re exploring additional features like story playlists, premium subscriber content, and enhanced accessibility options.
“Newport has always been a community that embraces both tradition and innovation,” said Belmore. “This new audio feature honors that spirit – preserving the essence of local storytelling while making it more accessible than ever.”
Readers who encounter any issues with the audio feature or have suggestions for improvement can contact our newsroom directly. We’re excited to hear how this new option enhances your What’sUpNewp experience.
