One lane in each direction of the Newport Pell Bridge will be closed for most of Monday, Oct. 26, and into the early hours of Tuesday for work on a girder bearing at Pier 10E, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority announced.

The westbound right lane closes at 7 a.m. Monday and the eastbound left lane at 9 a.m. Both are scheduled to reopen at 3 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27.

That means both directions will be reduced to a single lane from 9 a.m. Monday through the overnight hours — covering the evening commute off Aquidneck Island.

Pier 10E is on the Newport side of the bridge, between the east tower and the Newport approach.

RITBA is advising drivers to allow extra travel time, reduce speed and use caution near the work zone.

Similar closures are planned the following week, with dates and times to be announced, according to the authority.
