The City of Newport Department of Utilities announced that contractor Boyle & Fogarty will begin full-width milling of road surfaces starting Monday as part of a comprehensive street paving project.

The work will affect Spring Street, Dearborn Street, Perry Street, Dean Avenue, and the intersections of Dearborn Street and Thames Street, and Dean Avenue and Thames Street. The project is expected to take two weeks to complete.

In preparation for the construction, Boyle & Fogarty will place “No Parking” signs on Spring Street to provide adequate space for equipment and materials. Parking restrictions will be in effect during work hours, which run from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Despite the construction, the city said local vehicle and pedestrian access to homes will be maintained throughout the project.

“Our project team works diligently to minimize impacts,” the Department of Utilities stated in a news release.

Residents can expect increased noise, lights used at night, traffic, crews and heavy equipment with backup safety alarms during construction. The city advised people to use caution when traveling around construction areas and not to enter work sites for safety reasons.

The infrastructure work is described as necessary by city officials.
