IYRS School of Technology & Trades has announced that it will host its Holly Jolly Weekend on Dec. 6-7, 2024. The weekend kicks off with the IYRS Community Holiday Party on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, from 5:30-7:30 p.m,  in Restoration Hall at IYRS.

The weekend continues with the IYRS Artisan Holiday Market on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Those interested in attending as vendors can visit iyrs.edu/events/hollyjolly/market for information including the application. The IYRS Virtual Holiday Auction, which kicks off on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 6 a.m. will close at the commencement of Holly Jolly weekend on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m.

“The artisan market brings to life the art of building and making for which IYRS is known,” said IYRS President Kern Maass. “For those who can’t make it in person, the virtual auction is a great way to holiday shop while supporting the IYRS student experience.”

The school of marine trades and advanced technologies has four programs that celebrate hands-on skills: Boatbuilding & Restoration, Composites Technology, Digital Modeling & Fabrication, and Marine Systems.

Boatbuilding students are currently restoring four Beetle Cat sailboats and two Herreshoff 12 ½ sailboats while composite students just finished building and testing miniature catapults. Marine Systems students are working toward their ABYC Marine Systems certification including plumbing, hydraulics and welding, which is one of 8 certification exams they sit for during the 6-month program. Digital Modeling & Fabrication students are completing their foundational instruction in manual machining and are learning about 3d printing by designing and printing mechanical connections. Composites Technology students are making molds for an annual catapult project while studying to take the Certified Composites Technician (CCT) Open Molding exam.

In 2024, 90 percent of students had jobs upon graduation. Nearly 80 percent of IYRS students receive financial assistance. Prospective students interested in learning more about scholarship opportunities can visit iyrs.edu/admissions/financial-aid-scholarships-grants
