Jamestown Community Theatre holding auditions for Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along" (Jamestown Community Theatre)

Jamestown Community Theatre will hold auditions for “Merrily We Roll Along” on Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Jamestown Recreation Center, opening the company’s 36th season.

The musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth, follows composer Franklin Shepard, who achieves professional success at steep personal cost. The story unfolds in reverse, moving backward toward its beginning, when Frank and his friends are young and hopeful. The score includes “Old Friends,” “Our Time,” “Not a Day Goes By” and “Franklin Shepard, Inc.”

Auditions are by appointment and open to adults, teens and children in grade 5 and up. The production has six adult leads, one child lead, numerous featured singing and speaking roles, and ensemble parts.

Rehearsals run Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m., with choreography intensives on Friday, Oct. 16, and Friday, Oct. 30. Most actors will be needed only once or twice a week before production week, though the six adult leads will be at most rehearsals.

Ricky Martin directs, with music direction by Joseph Carvalho and choreography by Amanda Del Vecchio, Sam Mathias and Elle Roy.

Performances are Nov. 19-22. To sign up or request preparation materials and a character list, email jamestowncommunitytheatreRI@gmail.com.
