For the 18th consecutive year, People’s Credit Union has partnered with the Newport Gulls to sponsor the FANatic About Reading Program, which promotes reading among elementary school students on Aquidneck Island.

Players on the Gulls, a collegiate summer baseball team, volunteer their time reading books to children in local classrooms. As part of the program, they hand out bookmarks and challenge students to read four books over the summer. This year, children also received tickets for a chance to win prizes including a ceremonial first pitch at Cardines Field, a uniform jersey shirt and a game bat signed by team mascots Gully and Gully Jr. Tickets can be filled out at any People’s Credit Union branch through July 13.

The credit union will host its FANatic About Reading Night at Cardines Field on Wednesday, July 22, to honor students for their accomplishments.

“The FANatic About Reading program with the Newport Gulls is something we are very proud of,” said Courtney Hunter, head of community development for People’s Credit Union. “It’s truly inspiring to see these collegiate athletes make a positive impact in the community, both on and off the field.”

The program reaches more than 3,000 students in over 150 classrooms on Aquidneck Island each year. Founded in 1922 and headquartered in Middletown, People’s Credit Union is a member-owned community credit union.
